What a privilege! Meet DJ SueSide!

A grand master of the decks! He’s traveled the globe under the wings of the Wu-Tang Clan. We fired some extra questions ‘cause we need the full scoop. But will he spill? Or stay true to his code: “A Shaolin warrior never tells the Wu-Tang secret”

Either way, Wu-sdom coming from him is an honor. Ready to dive in?

"a Shaolin warrior never tells the Wu-Tang secret!"

These words are buzzing, knowing it comes from Wu-nergy he lives and breaths, lets get into it!

Every iconic journey has that pivotal moment when two worlds collide. Can you take us back to how you first crossed paths with Wu-Tang Clan? Was it a moment of fate, a mutual connection, or did you have to make a deliberate move to get into their orbit? What did that initial meeting or interaction feel like, and how did it lead to you becoming an integral part of their universe?
It started with Cilvaringz. When he got signed, I was his DJ at the time. It all began after our first European tour and the first tour with RZA, Masta Killa, and Beretta 9 from Killarmy. During this tour, RZA asked me to come DJ for him on his U.S. tour.

What was it like, the first time you heard Wu-Tang’s sound? Was there a specific track or moment that made you think, “I need to be involved in this movement”?
No, not really. It’s from my background at the time. I just loved the Wu-Tang sound; it was different. I first heard it on a tape in 1993, 'Protect Ya Neck.'

What was the first Wu-Tang album you played, and what did you learn about the group’s approach to music production and performance from that experience?
I had Prince Rakeem's solo album before he formed Wu-Tang Clan, the first album, 36 Chambers, of course. Anyone from my era was raised with kung fu movies, so I loved the fact that they blended that with hip-hop.

How did the synergy between you as a DJ and the Wu-Tang Clan evolve over the years? What has changed in your style or approach since your early days with the crew?
I still humble myself when I think about my experiences with Wu-Tang. Being able to DJ for Wu-Tang Clan members is something I never thought I would be doing.

As someone who’s seen the Wu-Tang Clan evolve firsthand, how would you describe their musical growth from Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) to their later projects?
EPIC AND UNHEARD OF!

How did RZA's approach to producing beats and creating their signature sound influence the way you craft your DJ sets and mixes?
...influenced me to be razor-sharp behind the decks!

From a DJ’s perspective, how do you think RZA's approach to beat-making and production differs from other producers in hip-hop? Were there any moments when you thought, “That’s something I’ve never heard before”?
The Wu-Tang sound is something else— that raw energy, organized chaos, and sharp lyrics. I haven’t heard anything that sounds like RZA’s production, or not to forget, 4th Disciple.

Did you ever get to experience the group in a completely different light—away from the public persona, in a private or off-the-record moment—that revealed more about their true personalities?
All I can say is dope individuals, but a Shaolin warrior never tells the Wu-Tang secret!

Do you think Wu-Tang’s influence will ever be surpassed, or is there something so unique about their artistry and philosophy that will keep them immortal in hip-hop culture?
Many will rise to a certain level of fame, but a group like Wu-Tang— even the Clan logo alone— the way it’s imbedded into hip-hop, it’s a household trademark.

Wu-Tang made a clear statement: Wu-Tang is forever. Wu-Tang is for the children.

If you had to describe the “essence” of Wu-Tang Clan in one word, what would it be and why?
UNITY! Their music and identity are deeply rooted in the strong bonds among its members. Each member brings their unique style and perspective, yet they come together to create a cohesive sound and message. The collective spirit of collaboration, loyalty, and support is evident in their lyrics, performances, and the way they represent their community. This sense of brotherhood not only defines their artistry but also fosters a sense of belonging among their fans, emphasizing the importance of unity and kinship in their journey.

The Wu-Tang Clan's philosophy has always been about self-empowerment and owning your path. How does this resonate with you as a DJ who’s carved out his own place in the music industry?
A day to a god is 1,000 years. Listen.

Wu-Tang’s history is rich with mythology and cultural references. As a DJ, how do you keep that mythology alive in your sets, ensuring the story and message continue to resonate with newer generations of listeners?
Music has evolved. It’s all about playing the right track at the right time. I know when to fire these tracks to spark minds.

Given how deeply connected Wu-Tang Clan is to New York’s hip-hop scene, how did the city’s culture and energy shape the creation of their music? Was there a distinct “New York sound” you had to keep in mind when mixing their music live?
Bring the ruckus when you play Wu tracks!
The culture and energy of New York City significantly influenced Wu-Tang Clan's music, shaping their sound, lyrical content, and overall identity as a pioneering hip-hop collective. Their work is a testament to the city's dynamic and multifaceted nature, capturing the spirit of its streets and the experiences of its people.

In your time with Wu-Tang, did you ever get the sense that the group was ahead of its time in terms of social or political consciousness? Was there ever a moment where you realized they were on a different wavelength from the mainstream?
Yes, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)— it took people a while to really understand the words, slang, terminology, and lyrics. They were way ahead!

Lastly, for you, what does owning or wearing a pair of Wu-Tang Dunks symbolize beyond just fashion? How does it connect to your personal narrative or your relationship with Wu-Tang’s music?
Representation of a legendary group, Black excellence, and remember—a DJ created that logo. Shoutout to DJ Mathematics!
